UNIT 5:  WASTE MANAGEMENT  (Year 6)

Lesson 1 : Waste
1 Waste is any materials that is no longer useful  and is thrown away.
2 There are various types of waste such as paper, plastic, glass, metal , chemical waste and organic waste.

b)      Factories
c)       Markets
d)      Foods stalls
e)      Agriculture farms
f)       Motor vehicles

IMPROPER WAYS OF WASTE DISPOSAL
1 Improper ways of waste disposal can be harmful to the evironment.
2 Example of improper waste disposal include
a)      Littering
b)      Open burning
c)       Throwing waste into drains or rivers
d)      Releasing smoke  from factories into the air

Lesson 2: Waste Efects
1 The harmful effects of improper waste disposal are
a)      Air pollution – caused by smoke and harmful gases from factories, motor vehicles and open burning.
b)      Water pollution – caused by the chemicals and toxic waste from factories, oil spills and sewage
c)       Flash floods – caused by waste that blocks the flow of water in drains and rivers
d)      Acid rain – caused by harmful substances that dissolve in rainwater
e)      Sickness and diseases – caused by harmful substances or animals such as rats and cockroaches that carry germs and cause diseases.

PROPER WAYS OF WASTE DISPOSAL
To avoid the harmful effects , waste should be disposed in the proper ways.
a)      All rubbish must be put in a plastic bag and tied up properly.
b)      Rubbish is thrown in a rubbish bin and covered.
c)       Avoid open burning
d)      Reuse or  recycle waste
e)      Sewage and waste from homes and factories must be treated before it is released into rivers.
